Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) was established as part of MIST in the academic session 2000-2001 as CSIT. From a modest beginning, offering undergraduate BSc programs to only military students, the dept has now evolved as one of the largest depts at MIST. The dept of CSE now offers BSc program at the undergraduate level, MSc and MEngg at the postgraduate level, as also a doctorate in philosophy Ph.D.
The dept of CSE boasts highly qualified faculties, along with state-of-the-art learning infrastructure which provides an ideal platform for students to hone in their skills in the field of computer sciences. The dept provides an ideal environment for the student to specialize in contemporary fields of Computer Science including Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Network & Data Security to name a few. The dept also collaborates with both the industry and Govt departments and agencies thereby establishing a symbiotic leadership for both stakeholders which is especially beneficial for students.
The mission of the Dept of CSE is drawn from the vision of MIST. The four-pronged missions of the Dept of CSE are as under.
To provide comprehensive education and conduct research in diverse disciplines of science, engineering, technology, and engineering management.
To produce technologically advanced intellectual leaders and professionals with high moral and ethical values to meet the socio-economic development of Bangladesh and global needs.
To conduct collaborative research activities with national and international communities for continuous interaction with academia and industry.
To provide consultancy, advisory, and testing services to government, industrial, educational, and other organizations by rendering technical support for widening practical knowledge and to contribute to sustainable socio-economic development.

Short Courses: Based on the requirement of the students, Govt establishments, industry, etc., the department of CSE conducts dynamic short courses of one to four weeks. Some recent short courses include a Certificate course on Cyber Security, Server Management, Mobile app development, etc.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) thrives on the expertise of its experienced and highly professional faculty members. Led by the Head of the department, our faculty team comprises 4 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, and 16 Lecturers, resulting in a commendable teacher-to-student ratio of 1.9. Our faculty members come from diverse nationalities, bringing with them varied prior professional experiences from sectors such as the military, industry, and academia. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) provides a conducive learning environment for students through cutting-edge classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. Our classrooms enable students to grasp the technical aspects of the subject, while our laboratories offer hands-on experience, fostering innovation. With air-conditioned classrooms equipped with broadband wifi, projection systems, and document readers, collaborative learning thrives. Currently, we have several existing laboratories, including the AI lab, PG research lab, Networking lab, and Intelligent Computing Lab.
Moreover, the department is also in the process of constructing a Research Innovation Center (RIC), which will further augment our facilities. The RIC aims to provide a state-of-the-art space for students and faculty to engage in groundbreaking research and innovation. Once completed, the RIC will offer advanced resources and equipment to support cutting-edge projects and initiatives. Establishing the RIC reflects our commitment to fostering a dynamic research culture within the department.
To enhance the learning resources within the Department, an exclusive Department library has been established, complementing the MIST Central library. With a collection of over 800 books and nearly 300 theses from former students, this library serves as a valuable asset. The selection of books is based on recommendations from both faculty members and students, ensuring their relevance and usefulness in supporting research endeavors.
The library receives substantial usage from students and serves as a vibrant center for research work and project activities conducted within the department. It provides an ideal platform for students enrolled in various courses to exchange ideas and foster collaboration among peers.
Research, Publication and Projects
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) thrives on the synergy between dedicated faculty members and state-of-the-art laboratories, providing an ideal environment for student research and project undertakings. Over the past five years, our collaborative efforts have resulted in over 80 publications in prestigious international and national journals, along with more than 560 conference papers that have made a global impact. This research prowess spans countries like the USA, UK, Japan, India, South Korea, and Spain. Our department actively engages in collaborations with industry partners, exemplified by our recent MoU with "Robi Axiata Ltd" to advance projects in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Analytics, bridging the gap between academia and industry.
In addition to industry collaborations, the Department of CSE has expanded its reach through strategic partnerships. We have signed an MoU with Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) to conduct digital lotteries, ensuring transparency and efficiency in plot allotments. Furthermore, our department has established an MoU with Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) to conduct their admission test, showcasing our expertise in reliable and secure examination systems. These collaborations reflect our commitment to cutting-edge research, innovation, and impactful partnerships, solidifying the Department of CSE's position as a leader in the field.
The department of CSE strives for its students to excel not only in academics but also in research work. With over 80 conference papers and 12 journal publications since 2015, Our students and faculty are actively present in the ECE research arena. With industrial training at over 12 reputed companies, UG students also get professional exposure during their stay at MIST. The department also hosts relevant conferences and seminars with the most recent being the seminar on “Growing cyber threats around the world and preparedness for Bangladesh”, where the Hon’ble Minister of State was the chief guest with many renowned speakers from the govt. and industry. The dept. also got the honor of hosting the 18th International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (ICCIT) in 2015 and is preparing to host the iCEEiCT-2021 along with the EECE dept of MIST.
Our students excel in various contests and have certainly made their mark on both national and international arenas with over 16 prizes (in 2019 alone) and have over the years participated in MARS and the European rover challenge, ICPC, NCPC, and various IUPCs, Hackathons, and contests. The department, through its computer club, grooms the students with weekly classes.
We also proudly hosted the 1st MIST Inter-University Programming Contest (IUPC) on February 2019 with an overwhelming response of 120 teams from 55 nationwide Universities nationwide. With the success of IUPC, MIST also got the honor of hosting the NCPC 2020 on 22 February 2020.
Under the guidance of experienced faculty members and with the unwavering support of MIST authority, our undergraduate and postgraduate students have consistently achieved remarkable milestones. They have excelled in prestigious competitions such as the MARS Rover Challenge in the USA, demonstrating their exceptional skills. Moreover, their dedication and self-motivation have been evident in securing multiple best paper awards both domestically and internationally. These talented individuals continuously demonstrate their exceptional capabilities by triumphing in diverse hackathons, programming contests, idea, and innovation competitions, as well as renowned conferences and seminars.

Notably, the CSE department has been the consecutive champion in both inter-department cultural competitions and inter-department debate competitions for the past two years. Moreover, our students have excelled in the realm of sports as well. In 2019, they achieved remarkable success by winning the championship and runners-up trophies in the athletics and cricket tournaments respectively, representing our department. Our students understand the importance of balancing academic pursuits with enjoyment. Consequently, they organize annual intra-department gaming (computers!) fests and cricket festivals, fostering a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere within the department.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) witnessed its first batch of graduates in the year 2004. Since then, a total of more than 1224 students have successfully graduated from our esteemed department. Our alumni have made significant contributions to various sectors, including industry, academia, and the Bangladesh Defense Forces. They have left their mark in renowned international companies such as IBM, CISCO, Oracle, and also in leading organizations within Bangladesh, such as Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink, Bangladesh Bank, PDB, BTRC, and Enosis Solutions. Moreover, our alumni have excelled as faculty members in prestigious national and international universities, showcasing their expertise and knowledge in the field. Their achievements serve as a testament to the high-quality education and training provided by the Department of CSE.

The MIST Computer Club (MCC), operating under the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), holds the distinction of being one of the pioneering clubs at MIST. With the active involvement of dedicated faculty members and enthusiastic students, MCC has established itself as one of the most vibrant clubs on campus. The club organizes exciting events, seminars, workshops, and courses throughout the year, in addition to conducting regular weekly programming classes for its members.
A recent notable achievement of MCC was hosting the prestigious NCPC 2020, a national-level programming contest in Bangladesh. This flagship event saw the participation of over 150 teams from 78 universities and institutes nationwide, reflecting the club's significant impact in promoting programming excellence.
